Briefs: Run for the Athletes 5K

The Aurora Police Department and Illinois Special Olympics are hosting the "Run for the Athletes" 5K on Nov. 7 at the Fox Valley Park District's Blackberry Farms, 100 S. Barnes Road, Aurora.
Registration is open from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m. All ages and walkers are welcome. The donation for the race is $20 before Oct. 31. From Nov. 1 through the day of the race, the fee is $25. For questions or concerns, call Doug, 630-973-6761.
The city will once again send gifts to Aurora residents in active military service who are stationed in the United States or overseas. Service personnel will receive a one-pound box of mixed nuts and a card in time for the holidays. The mixed nuts are provided by the Kiwanis Club of Aurora. Names and mailing addresses of Aurora citizens in active service may be phoned in to the Mayor's Office of Special Events at 630-844-4731 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or e-mailed to syoung@aurora-il.org. The deadline for submitting names is Nov. 13.
The community is invited to attend an outdoor Candlelight Vigil in recognition of survivors and in tribute to victims of domestic violence from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29 at Mutual Ground, 418 Oak Ave.
Interested senior citizens are invited to attend free "learning the computer" classes at the Quad County Urban League, Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 to 10:50 a.m.
Training covers the basics of e-mail, Internet surfing, online research and current technologies. Classes are held at the John C. Dunham Vocational and Educational Training Center, 1685 N. Farnsworth Ave. For more information or to reserve a space, call the League, 630-851-2203.
