No one hurt in I-88 truck fire

October 26, 2009

No one was hurt when a semi truck caught fire on westbound Interstate 88 just west of the Winfield Road exit shortly before 7:30 a.m. Monday, but at least a few commuters were delayed.

Rescue crews closed down all westbound lanes for nearly an hour while they extinguished the flames, but by about 8:15 a.m. traffic was moving again. The far right lane remained blocked for some time, as did the ramp from Winfield Road onto the westbound tollway, said Master Sgt. Juan Morales of the Illinois State Police.

The fire apparently began in the engine compartment, said Morales, who said the truck's cargo was metal racks.
