Downers South ends Raiders' season
With 1 minute, 37 seconds left to go in the Class 8A Round 2 playoff
game in Bolingbrook, Downers Grove South's Chandler Whitmer snuck into
the end zone behind his right guard for what would be the game-winning
score in the Mustangs 22-19 victory over the Raiders.
Downers Grove South found a way to grind out 10 needed points in the
second half and stood breathless as it saw a 40-yard field goal by Waubonsie Valley with 28 seconds remaining sail wide left. That allowed the
Mustangs to squeak out a 22-21 win in a Class 8A first-round playoff
game at Benedictine University.
Redemption = Providence
Short-term memory meant a long-term gain in several long runs for Providence. Tim Hanrahan finished with 209 yards rushing on 33 carries and scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime as the Celtics outlasted Oswego 16-10.
