Bicek named state's top senior

December 18, 2008

Downers Grove North senior Adrienne Bicek was named Senior Swimmer of the Year at the 32nd annual all-state dinner hosted by the Illinois Swimming Association on Dec. 10.

Bicek was one of three athletes nominated. The other two were Normal's Caitlin Hamilton and Bloomington's Monica Drake.

The University of Georgia-bound Bicek was the only individual state record holder among the trio thanks to her time of 4 minutes, 46.66 seconds in the preliminary heat of the 500-yard freestyle at the state meet in November.

The previous record had lasted 22 years and was the oldest state mark.

Bicek won the 200 individual medley at state, finished second in the 500 freestyle and helped the Trojans finish fifth as a team.

She competed recently with the Express Swim Team at the U.S. National Short Course Championships in Atlanta. Bicek took fourth in the 200 butterfly and 18th in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly.

Next month she takes part in the Pan-Pacific Games in Guam, competing for the U.S. against Canada, Australia and Japan.
