Montini earns some revenge on Freeport

December 11, 2008

In a rematch of last year's Class 3A girls basketball state semifinal, Montini got revenge on Freeport by edging the host Pretzels 51-47 on Dec. 6.

The Broncos (7-1) were down by nine points in the third quarter when Mallory Sosnovich scored all seven of her points to claw Montini back to 40-38 on her buzzer-beater to finish the quarter.

Montini opened the fourth quarter with a 12-0 run to take a 50-40 lead with 2:20 left.

"We wanted to get some revenge after they beat us last year," Whitney Adams said. "We have been waiting a long time for this game."

Adams scored five of her team-high 11 points in the 12-0 streak.

Freeport (7-1) closed the deficit to 50-47 on Katie Norman's five consecutive points, but Courtney Shiffer's two free throws with five seconds left sealed the victory.

Norman led the Pretzels with 14 points and Alison Seberger added 10 points for Montini.
