Repertory Theater to stage 'Phedra'
Jean Racine's "Phí¨dra," translated by Robert David MacDonald, will be performed at The New World Repertory Theater, 923 Curtiss St. in Downers Grove, beginning Nov. 7, with a reception preceding the performance.
The play runs Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. through Dec. 5. A preview performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 6.
MacDonald's translation captures the dramatic beauty and power of Racine's original French poetry. Based on ancient myths, the tragedy examines how love and unabated passions can destroy us all.
"Phí¨dra" is cursed by the gods to love her step-son, Hippolytus, who hides a secret love affair of his own. Emotional, turbulent and sexy, Phí¨dra is a mythical soap opera for the contemporary audience. Directed by theater movement specialist Alison Henderson, the production will be based on movement theorist Rudolf Laban's movement analysis. The play runs about 90 minutes with one intermission.
New World Repertory's production of "Phí¨dra" will also be performed at Theatre Building Chicago Jan. 21-Feb. 14.
The cast includes Sarah Pinkham, Brian Barber, Maggie Clennon-Reberg, Jared Graham, Stephanie Limes, Laura Merchut and Sean Wesslund.
Tickets are $20 Friday and Saturday nights, $15 for previews, Sunday matinees, and seniors/students with ID, and $12 for each ticket in groups of 10 or more. The theater is handicapped accessible with street and lot parking availability.
