Between food, parades and fireworks, Downers Grove knows how to throw a good Fourth of July party, and this year will be no exception. Residents can look forward to all the traditional Independence Day activities, including a historical look at Downers Grove, the Main Street parade and a fireworks extravaganza. Events start at 9:30 a.m. at Park District's Lincoln Center auditorium.

Electric vehicle drivers sport a grin when they cruise by a gas station. When the price of gas goes up another dollar, they're about the only ones smiling. "Hobbyists and people who care about the environment want electric cars for more than one reason," said John Emde, a member of the Fox Valley Electric Auto Association.

Downers Grove North senior Adrienne Bicek qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials in the 200-meter butterfly at the Speedo International Age Group Invitational meet on June 22. Bicek's personal-best time of 2 minutes, 16.46 seconds qualified her for the trials, which started in Omaha, Neb., on June 29 and runs through July 6.
