ROCKFORD -- St. Edward's 3200-meter relay team made history Friday night, advancing Downstate and setting a school record in the process.
The foursome of sophomore Megan Venlos, senior Nadia Suarez, sophomore Karoline Kelly and senior Ashley Lucas placed second in the Rockford Christian Class A Sectional, finishing in 10 minutes, 45 seconds. That effort shattered the previous school mark -- set in 1995 -- by 13 seconds.
Lucas also advanced Downstate in the 3200, placing second in 12:44 seconds. Except for her sophomore season, which was cut short by injury, Lucas has competed Downstate in each of her high school seasons.
"This is really exciting," said Green Wave coach Bill Lucas, Ashley's father. "It's great for the girls and for Ashley because she has teammates to share this with this time."
