Area Roundup: Hirsch, North Stars shut down Maroons

ST. CHARLES -- Zach Hirsch was nearly unhittable for the St. Charles North baseball team on Thursday as the North Stars claimed an 8-0 Upstate Eight Conference win against Elgin.

Hirsch (4-2) yielded only one hit while striking out 10 and walking nobody.

Jake Thornton and K.C. Wright each drove in a pair of runs to bolster Hirsch's dominating effort.

The North Stars (16-7, 12-5 UEC) also benefitted from five Elgin errors.

Maroons starter Tom Roth (3-4) worked four innings and allowed five runs, none earned. He struck out four and walked none.

"We aren't doing ourselves any favors with the way we're playing defense," Elgin coach Dave Foerster said.

Ben Hamblen had the only hit for Elgin (5-16, 5-15 UEC) in the fifth inning.

Neuqua Valley 6, Larkin 1 -- Luc Geier (1-5) tossed all six innings with only three runs against him earned. He also went 2-for-2 with a double.

"He did a nice job," Royals coach Doug Ellett said. "He threw the ball real well. He deserved better. We just kicked the ball around one inning and couldn't get more than one run for him."

Justin Kalusa added a hit and scored the lone run for Larkin (10-12, 9-10 Upstate Eight Conference).

Streamwood 9, Lake Park 6 -- Brian Brauer went 2-for-4, drove in two runs and also scored a pair to lead the Sabres (10-14, 9-10 Upstate Eight Conference). Ryan Kiesel added a pair of hits and a run scored.

Marmion 8, St. Edward 2 -- The Cadets jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning against Green Wave starter Kyle Tourtellott (0-1), who was tagged with the loss in the Suburban Catholic Conference matchup. Jordan Torres was 1-for-3 with an RBI for St. Edward (6-11, 5-8).

Softball

Bartlett 3, Elgin 1 -- Callie Dennison (7-1) yielded only three hits on her way to the win for the Hawks (18-5, 14-0 Upstate Eight Conference).

Rachel Anello had a pair of RBI singles and Steph Jones also drove in a run for Bartlett.

"It was a well-pitched game on both sides," Hawks coach Jim Wolfsmith said.

The Maroons (3-15, 3-9) took the lead in the first inning, but couldn't add on. Jenna Jaynes, Kelly Patchett and Lindsey Morrow had hits for Elgin. Patchett (2-12) struck out two and walked none.

Waubonsie Valley 2, St. Charles North 1 -- Christine Roggemann (5-1) struck out three and allowed earned runs in the first and fourth innings for the North Stars (16-10, 8-7 Upstate Eight Conference). North stranded 12 runners on base and scored their lone run in the top of the sixth.

St. Charles East 5, South Elgin 1 -- Rae Anne Payleitner drove in three runs to power the Saints past the Storm (14-8, 7-8 Upstate Eight Conference).

Gabby Moe (6-2) struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings for East (11-11, 7-5 UEC), while Victoria Perez tossed the final 2 1/3 frames. Jenny Niemiec added a pair of hits for East.

Lauren Vitiello had two hits and drove in a run for South Elgin (13-8, 7-8).

Genoa-Kingston 10, Rockford Lutheran 0 (10 inn.) -- Ashley Miller doubled, tripled and drove in three runs as part of 3-for-4 effort to pace the Cogs (14-8, 7-3), who closed out a second-place finish in the Big Northern Conference West.

Jen Clark went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Lindsay Decker added two hits and two RBIs. Brittany Giddings (2-1) struck out seven and gave up only four hits.

Streamwood 5, East Aurora 3 -- Beth McRill went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple to pace the Sabres (6-17, 6-9 Upstate Eight Conference). Kelsey Johnson (2-4) pitched and struck out five.

Aurora Christian 16, Westminster Christian 4 (5 inn.) -- Hannah Graves had a pair of hits and Anna Mitchell drove in two runs for the Warriors (4-11).
