ROCKFORD – The Westminster Christian girls basketball team's first win of the year produced the consolation championship at the Rockford Christian Tournament on Friday, upending Alden-Hebron 43-29.

"Our preparation really showed tonight," said Westminster coach Ken Flickinger "Our defense was very solid. We working on some man-to-man techniques and that worked out really well for us."

Leading the Warriors (1-2) in three categories was Rachel Doby, who ended the night with 13 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots.

"Rachel did really well for herself. She went to the rim and also got some nice outside looks," said Flickinger. "Defensively, our guard pressure was so good that she was able to just sort of camp in back make a lot of nice plays. She doesn't make many mistakes in the paint."

Sarah Rodgers (11 points, 6 steals) and Whitney VandenBos (8 points) also aided the Warriors' cause.

"Overall, I'm pretty pleased," Flickinger said. "We're still not shooting the ball as well as I'd like, but that's just something we'll get in the gym and work on."

Jacobs 39, St. Viator 37 – What should have been an easy win at the Dundee-Crown Tournament turned into something of a nail-biter for the Golden Eagles (3-0).

A 12-point lead early in the second half was trimmed to one late in the contest before Jacobs iced the game at the free-throw line. Despite the win, Jacobs coach Ed Haugens knows the team has a lot of work to do.

"Give Viator credit. They played better than us and they deserved to win," Haugens said. "They killed us on the boards and we just rushed things on offense. If we made more than two passes (per possession), it was a miracle. We have a long way to go to be where we're capable of being."

Melanie Schwerdtmann (12 points) and Hailey Cnota (10 points) led the scoring for Jacobs.

Bartlett 57, Sandburg 44 – The Hawks (1-1) evened their record at the Naperville Central/Benet Tournament. Kristen Conniff led Bartlett with 18 points and five rebounds. Also logging solid efforts for Bartlett were Jacki Gulczysnki (14 points, 4 rebounds) and Christina Carlson (8 points, 6 rebounds).

Rockford Lutheran 72, Larkin 8 – The Royals (0-2) were completely overwhelmed at the Oregon Tournament. Taitiana Holbert scored six points for Larkin. It has been a rough going thus far for the Royals, who have been outscored 127-24 through two games this season.

"Defensively, we actually looked like a basketball team for some of the first half," said first-year Larkin coach Alphonso Lott. "Offensively, we didn't exist. I think the girls are still a little bit deer in the headlights out there. We've got a week off after this tournament before our conference games start, and that's a week that we will need to work on some things."
