Area Roundup: Burke pitches Whips to win
HAMPSHIRE -- The Hampshire baseball team split its season series with Richmond-Burton on Wednesday by claiming a 6-1 five-inning victory.
Ryan Burke (4-2) gave up only three hits. He struck out four and walked three.
Matt Kuefner went 3-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Whip-Purs (12-10, 5-4 Big Northern Conference East Division). Burke aided his own cause with a double and three RBIs. The Rockets came into the game tied for first in the BNCE.
Streamwood 10, East Aurora 1 (5 inn.) -- Rob Barth (2-for-2) hit a first-inning grand slam in the Sabres' win. Brain Brauer (2-for-3, RBI) aided the cause, while Brian Domokos (1-1) picked up the win, allowing one hit, two walks and striking out seven. Streamwood improves to 9-14 overall and 8-10 in the Upstate Eight Conference.
Grayslake Central 2, Huntley 1 -- After taking a 1-0 advantage in the first, the Red Raiders failed to score the rest of the way and gave up their lead in the sixth. Nathan Prokuski (6-3) took the loss despite allowing only two runs and four hits in seven innings of work. Craig Lipp (1-for-2, double) and Ray Foote (1-for-3, RBI) contributed with the bats for Huntley (14-12, 3-6 Fox Valley Conference Fox Division).
Softball
Burlington Central 4, Genoa-Kingston 0 -- Mackenzie Scott struck out 14 and allowed only two hits in the complete-game victory. Central (22-1) was led at the plate by Kayla Oranger (2-for-4, 2 runs) and Brittany Priest (triple, RBI).
For the Cogs (13-8), Lindsay Decker struck out 10 and Ashley Miller and Jami Miller had hits.
Huntley 6, Grayslake North 3 (10 inn.) -- Huntley (16-8, 9-2 FVC Fox) tallied three runs in the top of the 10th to take the lead. Alex Albanese (4-for-6, 2 RBIs), Jenna Mychko (3-for-6, RBI) and Deanna DeBosschere (3-for-6, 2 RBIs) paced the offense.
Samantha Clemons (14-5) earned the win after pitching all 10 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk, while striking out eight.
Jacobs 3, Cary-Grove 1 (6 inn.) -- Lauren Arceneaux went 2-for-2 with a homer to lead the Golden Eagles (19-2, 10-0 FVC Valley). Lizzy Andrews doubled and Stephanie Schmidt added a hit, while Becky Wilson (9-2) struck out four and scattered four hits and two walks.
Girls Soccer
Hampshire 5, Marengo 1 -- Alex Field tallied two goals and added an assist as the Whip-Purs cruised to the BNCE win. Devon Murphy (2 goals), Christine Schumacher (goal, assist), Kelsey Burke (assist) and Kayla Meyer (assist) also had a hand in the scoring for Hampshire (13-6-2, 4-3-1).
"The girls knew they needed to start scoring and they were hungry to do that tonight," Hampshire coach Patrick O'Brien. "I'm proud of the way they kept at it, even after the weather turned sour."
Burlington Central 3, Harvard 1 -- Michelle Fowler scored and had an assist in the Rockets' win. Kelly Engelking and Kalena Richards also scored, with Bri Conran supplying an assist for Central (10-7-1, 5-1 BNCE).
St. Charles North 9, Elgin 0 -- Caitlin Winkelman (2), Ashley Capone, Maggie Hamilton, Lauren Muth, Paige Dusek, Kaitlyn Julison, Leah DeMoss and Annette Gwozdz all scored for North in the UEC win.
Jacobs 3, Prairie Ridge 1 -- Kelsey Quitschau, Markie Rahn and Jesica Perone scored consecutive goals to overcome a 1-0 early deficit. Kelsey Quitschau and K.C. Roller provided assists for Jacobs (8-13, 7-3 FVC Valley).
College Baseball
ECC 15, Madison Area Tech 5 -- On Tuesday, ECC (25-14) scored eight runs in the top of the eighth to break open what had been a 7-5 game.
Austin Licon (3-for-4, 5 RBIs), Jorge Garza (2-for-5, 2 RBIs), Greg Stolzenburg (2-for-6, 3 RBIs), Matt Revelle (3-for-3) and Trevor Rutkowski (2-for-5) led the offense. Rob Quick (3-1) earned the win.
