Tough times for area teams at D-C

November 22, 2009

CARPENTERSVILLE -- Hampered by a turnover-filled game that kept its inside trio from being able to get rolling, Streamwood fell to St. Viator 50-45 on Saturday at the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Sabres (1-1) and Lions (1-1) combined for 54 turnovers in the contest, with Streamwood committing 29.

"Turnovers were probably the difference," Streamwood coach George Rosner said, "And in spite of our size, we missed some big rebounds." After leading 20-17 at the half, the Sabres shot just 4 of 14 and committed eight turnovers in a sloppy third quarter that saw St. Viator take a 32-29 lead heading into the fourth.

The Lions' pressure gave the Sabres fits all day.

"You see what they're doing and you've got to adjust," Rosner said. "We did some good things but not enough. We should have got some layups off that press." Streamwood twice cut the lead down to one in the fourth but could never get over the hump. The Lions led by as many as nine before a late Sabres run closed the deficit to five by the final buzzer.

Streamwood's three post players, Michelle Tomczak (13 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks), Emma Schmidt (13 points, 8 rebounds) and Melissa Oehlerking (10 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals) all showed flashes, but whether it was due to foul trouble, turnovers or bad shooting could never get going.

"I think it was the pressure," Schmidt said. "They were great at anticipating, a very quick team. We had to get it inside but it was tough. They were double-teaming and triple-teaming all the posts. It was hard." Jessica Cerda chipped in on defense with four steals.

Streamwood shot just 30 percent (13-for-43) in the contest to St. Viator's 38 percent (19-for-50).

Rockton Hononegah 62, Dundee-Crown 41 -- The Chargers fell behind early and could never recover.

Hononegah (1-1) rode some hot perimeter shooting in the first quarter to build a 22-7 advantage and enjoyed a 21-point lead by the half.

The Chargers (0-3) shot a woeful 17 percent (5-for-30) in the first half.

For its part, D-C was able to play pretty even with the Indians in the second half behind the feisty play of Ali Sanders, Amy Fasanella (9 points, 6 rebounds) and Alexis Holm (6 rebounds, 4 steals).

"The hustle, the rebounding was there," D-C coach Michelle Russell said. "It just took us until the second half to figure out how to stop their shooters. Once they figured out what that meant, we held them to kind of an even game in the second half."

While all three contributed defensively, Sanders helped D-C keep it from getting out of hand on the scoreboard, totaling 18 points and eight rebounds on the night.

"We have a young team," said Sanders, a sophomore. "So it's really cool that we have a lot of young players that are playing so that next year we'll have a better season. (Now), we just have to go out there and play as hard as we can."

Added Russell: "She had a real nice game. Sometimes she has to run the point for us and that kind of limits her scoring, but we're expecting to see a lot of good things out of her."

Dundee-Crown committed 25 turnovers, with Hononegah turning it over 21 times.

Hononegah's Elizabeth Jordan led all scorers with 26 points, including six 3's.

South Elgin drops two -- The Storm ended up on the short end of both of its games at the D-C Tournament.

The Storm fell to Lake Zurich 54-47 in the morning before losing an overtime heartbreaker to McHenry 63-62 in the afternoon.

Against Lake Zurich, Becca Smith tallied 26 points and Dijon Smith added seven points.

In its game with McHenry, South Elgin (0-2) rallied from 12 points down heading into the fourth quarter to force overtime, but was outscored 10-9 in the extra period. Becca Smith again led the Storm, scoring 21 points. Dijon Smith finished with 13 points.
