Hampshire starts fast in easy win

November 20, 2009

DEKALB -- With three starters back from a team that went 24-5 last season, the Hampshire girls basketball team figures to be an area force once again this year.

The Whip-Purs wasted no time showcasing their talents in their season-opener on Friday night, taking down St. Bede 60-24 at the DeKalb Thanksgiving Tournament.

Senior Chrissy Heine led the way, going 10 of 14 from the field en route to a game-high 20 points. Junior Alex Dumoulin, a double-double machine last year, finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. The final returning starter, Cassie Dumoulin, had five points and five steals on the night.

The Whips also got a big lift from their bench as junior Jessica Van Dorin came in and hit three 3-pointers to finish with nine points.

"I thought we showed a little more depth than I thought we would have," said Hampshire coach Sue Ellett. "Some of our younger kids played really hard and I saw leadership out of my kids who played three or four years for me so there was a nice sense of calmness when we started.

"Usually that first game you have too many jitters. I thought Chrissy, Cassie and Alex – their presence was felt more so than just their scoring and rebounding."

The Whips came out in a full-court press and used it the entire first half, leading to 14 turnovers, 24 for the game.

Cassie Dumoulin got a steal and layup in the waning seconds of the second quarter to give the Whips a 35-17 halftime lead.

Van Dorin hit consecutive 3's in the third quarter, helping Hampshire open a 49-24 advantage.

"That kid can shoot and she's getting better at knowing when her shot is there and when it's not," Ellett said. "Just being patient and waiting for her opportunity. She came right in and hit some shots."

Hampshire shot 26 of 52 (50 percent) from the field, while St. Bede (0-1) was held to 10-of-43 (23 percent) shooting and went scoreless in the fourth quarter.

The lopsided win allowed Ellett to use all four players on the bench.

"I was really just more concerned about my kids and their development than worrying about situations in the game today," Ellett said. "Getting everybody some time and trying to figure out some good rotations for the year."

Kelsey Moravec led St. Bede with six points.

Hampshire starting guards Karla Vietinghoff and Kelsey Anderson finished with six points and four points, respectively.
