Jacobs downs rival Dundee-Crown

October 10, 2009

ALGONQUIN –Jacobs and Dundee-Crown entered Friday night's contest with identical records and five-game losing skids. The host Golden Eagles held serve over their Fox Valley Conference Valley Division rivals with a dominant defensive display en route to a 37-6 victory.

D-C , which lost to Jacobs for the seventh consecutive time, leads the all-time series between the School District 300 foes 16-11.

Jacobs (2-5, 1-2) frustrated D-C signal caller Tanner Kotlan into five interceptions and forced six on the night.

The Golden Eagles struck quickly, taking advantage of quality field position on their first drive after a 35-yard punt return and a 10-yard D-C penalty. Sophomore Kyle Wright scored on a 16-yard touchdown run on Jacobs' first play of the game with 10:21 left in the first quarter. Wright was called up to the varsity roster two weeks ago and ended his night with 192 yards on 30 carries.

"He's played great for us," said Jacobs coach Dean Schlueter. "He's made the most of the opportunity we gave him and he played really well tonight."

Jacobs' defensive dominance came to the forefront on its next score. D-C had the ball on its own 1-yard line when Kotlan dropped back and delivered a pass straight into the arms of Jacobs sophomore linebacker Henry Gigeous, who ran it into the end zone to push Jacobs' lead to 12-0 with 11:57 left in the first half.

"I'm happy coach gave me the opportunity to make a play," said Gigeous. "It's been tough the last couple of games, but we've always had it in us. It's just about execution."

The Chargers (1-6, 0-3) did an adequate job holding Jacobs' scoring attack in check in the first half, as the Golden Eagles' only offensive score came via the short field.

"We made some mistakes, but overall I felt the defense took some steps forward," said D-C coach Mike Davis. "They tackled much better and we just had a couple breakdowns. Other than that, I think they did a lot better."

The second half brought more D-C turnovers, leading to more Golden Eagles points.

Two plays after Jacobs' Mike Stein picked off another Kotlan pass, quarterback Jason Judson ran the option to his left and kept the ball himself for a 49-yard touchdown scamper. The Golden Eagles failed on the two-point conversion attempt and led 18-0 at the 5:50 mark of the third quarter.

On the Chargers' next possession, running back Steve Schwartz got into the turnover act, throwing an interception to Jacobs' T.J. Brooks on a halfback pass attempt. Jacobs countered with a halfback pass of its own on the very next play as Zach Bates found Joey Cieniewicz in the end zone from 25 yards out to extend the Golden Eagles' lead to 24-0.

Fourth-quarter touchdown runs by Wright and Sean Bergeron fueled the Jacobs rout before Kotlan hit Geoff Clifford with a 7-yard touchdown pass on the game's final snap to give D-C its lone score.

"Our guys were just in position all night," Schlueter said of his opportunistic defense. "We just didn't give up many big plays. We are a running team and we wanted to establish that, but the turnovers really helped us."

Stein ended his night with three interceptions.

Kotlan was 13-of-41 passing for 180 yards with five interceptions.

Jacobs also dominated the ground game, outgaining D-C 276 yards to 27.
