Warriors dispatch Maroons

October 10, 2009

AURORA — Waubonsie Valley recovered from an early turnover to score 21 first-half points on its way to a 41-0 shutout of Elgin on Friday night, breaking a two-game losing streak in the process.

After fumbling on the Warriors' first possession of the night, senior quarterback Kenny Clay proceeded to atone by accounting for four touchdowns in an Upstate Eight Conference triumph.

On their next possession, Clay took the Warriors right down the field and found senior wide receiver Scott Kuehn in the left corner of the end zone for a 19-yard score, which completed a 70-yard drive on nine plays, to put Waubonsie up 7-0 with 3:53 left in the first quarter.

"Last week, we pretty much had the same conditions. This week we had no rain," said Clay. "It was easier to throw the ball this week and Coach (Paul Murphy) took the right plays, so we could get going early and get into a rhythm. That's what we did."

Clay and senior running back Maurice Bowman added touchdowns runs later in the half as the Warriors took advantage of good field position.

Clay would add a 16-yard TD run to his ledger midway through the third quarter.

Clay was efficient for Waubonsie (4-3, 3-2), going 8-of-14 passing for 156 yards and two TDs.

Waubonsie's defense did a great job bottling up Elgin's offense all night. The Maroons (2-5, 2-2 Upstate Eight) totaled only one yard offensively in the first half.

"Our defense was outstanding all week in practice," said Murphy. "I knew they were gonna come out and play. They bailed us out with our two turnovers to start each half. I was a little disappointed in that, but our defense did a nice job shutting (Elgin) down and getting us the ball back."

Maroons senior quarterback Ryan Parks was 5 of 16 for 12 yards.

"We struggled offensively. We have been (struggling) the last couple of weeks," said Elgin coach Dave Bierman. "We've got to be able to throw the ball. We weren't able to do that."

Elgin standout Jordan Dean, averaging 104.7 yards rushing per game, gained just 10 yards on 14 attempts.
