Lake Park handles Elgin

September 26, 2009

ELGIN -- Turnovers took the wind from Elgin's sails Friday night as the Maroons fell 34-6 to Lake Park in an Upstate Eight Conference battle.

Elgin coughed the ball up four times before halftime, including three fumbles that were each follwed by Lancers touchdowns.

"Those are killers, no doubt about it," Maroons coach Dave Bierman said. "We'd get a first down and then give the ball back. You can't win doing that."

Lake Park (4-1, 3-0) struck quickly with three first-quarter touchdowns, including two scoring passes from Larry Nawrot.

Meanwhile, the Maroons (1-4, 1-1) struggled to find a rhythm on offense. Both times Elgin was able to venture into Lancers territory, the drive ended in a turnover.

Both Lake Park scoring drives of the second quarter began on the Maroons' half of the field as the Lancers led 34-0 at halftime.

Elgin did launch a sustained attack on its first posession of the second half. Craig McKenzie capped an 80-yard drive with a 5-yard TD run. The score was set up by a 16-yard strike from QB Jake Meyer to Michael Riggio.

Ray Crosby owned Elgin's longest play of the night when he broke a 45-yard run late in the game.

"We had a bad first quarter, but the kids deserve credit for keeping up the effort despite the hole we dug ourselves," Bierman said. "It was nice to see that effort for a big homecoming crowd."
