Gators trounce Dundee-Crown

September 26, 2009

CARPENTERSVILLE – Crystal Lake South spoiled Dundee-Crown's homecoming celebration by dealing the Chargers a 55-7 defeat Friday night in the opening of Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play.

The state-ranked Gators (5-0, 1-0) were every bit as good as advertised as they outgained the Chargers (1-4, 0-1) in total yardage 425-117.

South scored in a variety of ways on five rushing touchdowns, a pass, a kick return and an interception return. The Gators, ranked seventh in Class 7A, used 14 running backs to rack up 339 yards on the ground.

"We knew they were going to be a challenge for us," said D-C coach Mike Davis. "They are obviously a very good team. They are big, strong and fast and I just didn't see a single weakness."

The Gators marched 52 and 56 yards to score on their first two possessions to set the tone early. CLS led 42-0 at halftime to create a running clock in the second half. The Chargers did not help their own cause by turning the ball over six times.

Quarterback Tanner Kotlan had four interceptions in his return from a suspension. Kotlan did lead D-C to its lone scoring drive early in the third quarter. Kotlan completed five straight passes as the Chargers marched 83 yards, culminating with an 11-yard TD run by Mateusz Drozdz.

"I thought the effort was good," said Davis. "And especially compared to the last couple weeks. The only thing we could ask is that the guys played hard. Sometimes you're just outmanned."
