Streamwood trounced by Lake Park
ROSELLE -- After a drubbing last week at the hands of St. Charles East, Streamwood was looking to get back on track on the road Friday night against Lake Park.
Much like the game against the Saints, Streamwood stuck with the Lancers through one quarter, but a 29-point second quarter surge won it for Lake Park, 42-7.
"What can I say?" said Streamwood coach Cal Cummins. "We didn't have such a great week at practice. It just goes to show you that the old saying you practice like you play' is true. You can't expect to go out there and play to your potential when you practiced the way we did this week."
Injury concerns at the quarterback position continued for Streamwood (1-3, 0-2 Upstate Eight Conference) as sophomore Dalton Lundeen injured his collarbone late in the second quarter. Wide receiver Nick Pryor took over at quarterback in the second half.
"It's too bad," Cummins said. "We liked Dalton, the way he was playing. Hopefully, the doctors will clear our senior (Joey Hanover)and he can get back out there. Until then, Nick will fill in. He's not used to the quarterback position, but he's an athletic player that can do some positive things for us."
In his first two quarters, Lundeen managed 17 yards through the air on just four attempts.
The Sabres were outgained 207-76 in the first half. Lake Park (3-1, 2-0) scored early in the second on an 11-yard pass from Larry Nawrot to Collin Mruk to make it 14-0. Four minutes later, Artie Monaco turned what looked like a broken punt return into a 62-yard back-breaker for the Lancers.
Lake Park turned another seemingly broken play into a 15-yard touchdown when Monaco improvised and flipped the ball to Nawrot as the running back was headed for the ground. The Lancers' last score of the second quarter came on a Clay Cooper 3-yard touchdown run with under a minute remaining.
The Sabres' lone score came when Pryor broke two tackles and ran for a 61-yard touchdown to make it 42-7.
"I told the kids that this looked a lot like the game against St. Charles East," Cummins said. "If not for a few plays in the second quarter, we would have been right there with them. You can take plenty from this game. We just have to come out here next week and play hard."
