Hampshire cruises to first victory

September 18, 2009

BYRON -- For the second straight year Hampshire put an 0-3 start in the rearview mirror by beating Byron in Week 4.

This time, the Whip-Purs dominated the Tigers in every facet of the game for a 32-0 win Friday night. The Whips did most of their damage in the first half en route to 405 total yards, while holding Byron to just 197.

Hampshire (1-3) scored touchdowns on its first three possessions of the game and on four of its five first-half possessions to take a 26-0 lead into halftime.

"It was déjà vu all over again," said Hampshire coach Dan Cavanaugh. "We played well on both sides of the ball. We really worked hard. I give these guys all the credit. It was a great week of practice so it was a good team win, both sides of the ball."

Senior Caleb Kendrick accounted for 164 of Hampshire's 288 rushing yards, and did so on just 12 carries.

After throwing for 188 yards in his first start last week, senior quarterback Ryan Burke was right on target for the second week in a row. He threw for 117 yards and two touchdowns on 5-of-7 passing.

No play was more impressive than Burke's 92-yard touchdown pass down the middle of the field to junior Ray Quesada on a third-and-17 from the 8-yard line, which put the Whips up 20-0 early in the second quarter.

"He's got some wheels and you'll see more of him," Cavanaugh said. "He's our trackster who can really go get it. It was a nice throw, too."

Burke had another 8-yard touchdown pass to Quesada with 1:04 left in the first half to put Hampshire up 26-0. Those were Quesada's only two catches of the game as he ended with 100 yards receiving and two scores.

"Ryan did a nice job of managing the game, throwing the ball," Cavanaugh said. "You give a lot of credit to Ryan Burke in only his second straight week of starting."

Hampshire received the opening kickoff and made it 6-0 on the fourth play from scrimmage when senior Ron Laramie raced 36 yards up the middle for a touchdown.

After holding Byron (0-4) to a three-and-out, Hampshire got the ball at its own 38-yard line and needed just two plays to score. Kendrick scampered for a 59-yard gain before Laramie finished it off with a 3-yard touchdown plunge for a 12-0 lead.

Laramie finished with 53 yards on 10 carries. Kendrick's final carry of the night was a 29-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to give Hampshire its final score.

Hampshire gave up most of its rushing yards in the fourth quarter with the backups in, but still managed to pitch a shutout.

"Our offensive line did a nice job of blocking and our backs ran well," Cavanaugh said. "It was a well-balanced offense. We'd like the shutout but it was more important to get all our kids in the game and we did that. It's nice to see we have some depth."
