Johnsburg coasts past Dundee-Crown
JOHNSBURG – After giving up more than 250 yards rushing to Streamwood last week, Dundee-Crown was determined to stop the run against Johnsburg on Friday night.
And for the most part the Chargers did. However, the results against the dangerous Skyhawks passing attack was another story. Johnsburg quarterback George Bielis threw three touchdowns, including a pair to Illinois-bound tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz.
Johnson routed the Chargers 55-7 in a Fox Valley Conference crossover matchup.
"They can hurt you in a lot of ways," said D-C coach Mike Davis. "You try to stop what you can, but they beat us with some big plays."
The 6-foot-7 Fiedorowicz lived up the hype as he pulled down four catches for 64 yards, including TD grabs of 27 and 16 yards. He also had a 58-yard kick return to start the game that set up the Skyhawks' first score.
The Chargers (1-2) also were hurt by four turnovers of which two fumbles led to Johnsurg (3-0) TDs.
Special teams also continue to be a thorn in the Chargers' side. D-C gave up a 35-yard punt return early in the second quarter, which led to the go-ahead TD pass.
"These are things we've been struggling with all season," said Davis. "The turnovers and the long kick returns will just kill you."
The Chargers tied the game 7-7 early in the first quarter when quarterback Nick Torres hooked up with Danny Sharp on an 84-yard TD pass. Johnsburg then exploded for four TDs in the second quarter to take a 35-7 halftime lead.
Torres did an admirable job of stepping in on one day's notice for starter Tanner Kotlan, who was benched for school disciplinary reasons, according to Davis. Torres threw for 155 yards and Sharp rushed for 61 yards and caught four passes for 103 yards.
"I was a little nervous, but I was ready to go," said Torres, a senior. "I quarterbacked as a freshman and sophomore so I knew what to expect. I just thought when (Johnsburg) picked it up tonight we backed down. We weren't up to the challenge."
