CLS throttles Bartlett

September 4, 2009

STREAMWOOD -- After a 47-point road win in its opener last week, Bartlett looked to validate that form against a tough Crystal Lake South team which entered Friday night's game at Millennium Field as the state's eighth-ranked team in Class 7A.

But it was the visiting Gators who left no doubt as to who was the superior team. The Gators dominated the Hawks in every facet on their way to an authoritative 40-0 win.

The Gators (2-0) went on top midway through the first quarter as running back Bolek Mikulec capped a four-play, 13-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. The Gators had taken possession in the Hawks red zone following an interception by defensive back Alec Giles.

Trailing 7-0 in the second quarter, things only got worse for the Hawks (1-1). Giles (4 catches, 65 yards) scored the second Gators touchdown on an 8-yard pass from quarterback Drew Ormseth about 4:30 into the second quarter.

After the Hawks were forced to punt deep in their own territory, the snap on the punt went over the punter's head and out of the end zone for a safety. The Gators would add two more scores in the second quarter -- a 3-yard touchdown run by Brandon Erickson (5 carries, 32 yards) with 1:45 to play and Mikulec added a 27-yard field goal with two seconds remaining in the half to extend the lead to 26-0.

The Gators would add two more touchdowns in the second half -- a 15-yard scoring pass from Ormseth to tight end John Walsh in the third quarter, and a 19-yard scoring run by Cameron Scott in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 40-0, and triggering the running clock for the final 9:35.

"As good as we played last week, it was just the opposite tonight," said Bartlett coach Tom Meaney. "It wasn't meant to be from the beginning. The defense broke down, the special teams had issues, and offensively we couldn't do anything."

It was the second-worst loss in the history of the Bartlett program. The Hawks endured a 48-0 defeat against Oswego in Week 3 of the 1998 season -- the program's inaugural varsity campaign.

The Hawks did not record a first down until over two minutes into the fourth quarter. They finished with two and a total of 28 yards total offense.

Eleven different players shared ground duties for the Gators, led by Mikulec's 47 yards on nine carries. The team totalled 249 rushing yards on 51 attempts.

"Experience helps," said Meaney. "Crystal Lake South returned 15 starters just like we did last year. They had three big kids up front and we couldn't handle them. We were a step behind their passing game; we did a poor job tackling and a poor job blocking tonight."
