Raiders ready for move to Valley
Changes on the field and schedule alike accompany the start of the 2009 season for Huntley.
Last year the Red Raiders finished 9-2, advanced to the second round of the Class 6A playoffs and won the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division. It was the best showing for Huntley football since a trip to the state semifinals in 2001.
This year, Huntley makes the jump to the Valley Division -- traditionally a much tougher division with the likes of Crystal Lake South, Cary-Grove and McHenry.
"The Valley Division is obviously much tougher from top to bottom," said Huntley coach Steve Graves. "We expect to be competitive."
Back on the sidelines is Mike Slattery, who coached the team from 1998-2004. He takes over as offensive coordinator.
Gone is the graduated Jordan Neukirch -- who rushed for 1,715 yards last season -- and is arguably the best all-around football player to come through Huntley. He now competes at Illinois State University.
Still, plenty of weapons return on both sides of the ball -- especially at the skill positions -- as Huntley looks for its second straight playoff berth.
Senior Brandon Luczak (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) is back under center. Senior All-FVC tight end Marcus Popenfoose (6-2, 260) also returns along with senior running backs Brett Kleckner (6-2, 220) and Tanner Stearns (5-10, 190). Senior Mike Zermeno (5-11, 285) is the only returning starter on the offensive line.
Defensively, Kleckner and senior Kevin Doran (6-1, 195) are back as experienced linebackers. Stearns and senior Joe Muren (6-1, 190) are defensive backs, while senior Tor Larkin (5-10, 180) remains on special teams as the kicker/punter.
