Rockets hope to regain winning form

August 27, 2009

Outmanned during a 2-7 season, reinforcements have arrived at Burlington Central.

The Rockets had 46 players report for varsity practice and coach Aaron Wichman hopes returning experience and competition for playing time turns things around in 2009.

"I think our seniors and juniors want to prove themselves," said Wichman, who is leading the largest turnout in his six years at the helm.

Third-year starter Tim Seyller (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) anchors a veteran offensive line, manning a tackle position. Senior Tim Vincent (5-11, 220) and juniors Brent Sunderlage (5-10, 205) and Thomas Juns (5-10, 240) should be solid at the guard positions while junior Dominic LoPiccolo (5-11, 190) likely will see time at center. Count senior Justin Ott (6-4, 245) -- a defensive starter last season -- and junior Rene Saravia (5-11, 235) in the mix as well.

"The offensive line is a good place to start," said Wichman. "They've worked hard and to a man are stronger."

Junior Tim Maroder (5-10, 180) figures to play quarterback after a season-ending leg injury to senior Tim Botsford. The running backs are Tre Llanes (5-11, 175, junior), Roberto Cardenas (5-8, 185, senior), Alejandro Cardenas (5-8, 190, sophomore) and Michael Kellenberger (6-0, 170, junior).

Senior Kevin Kellish (6-1, 175) was the team's top receiver last year and is back for his third varsity season. Junior Eric Schwarting (6-2, 190) could see time at tight end.

The defense also showcases some experience with Maroder and Kellish returning as starters in the secondary. Brandon Westergaard (5-10, 175) is also back.

Junior Evan Billek (6-0, 180), Alejandro Cardenas and Massachusetts junior transfer Rob Grosskopf (6-0, 230) could factor in at linebacker.

Returning starters on the defensive line include senior end Austin Prestidge (6-3, 190) and senior tackle J.J. Branecki (5-8, 190).

"We have a lot of experience back, but we haven't proven to be successful yet at the varsity level," said Wichman.
