Cogs keep rolling, down Somonauk
GENOA -- The Genoa-Kingston girls basketball team defeated Somonauk 53-27 Wednesday for its second win in as many nights.
The Cogs (8-6), after a draining overtime win over Byron Tuesday night, were in control against Somonauk from the outset.
"We were up 14-2 after the first period and it was nice to get a good win coming off a tough one last night," G-K coach Todd McDillon said. "I was subbing pretty liberally and I was happy to get some rest for our players."
Lauren Strohmaier led the Cogs with 12 points. Molly Meier (11 points) and Karlie Fisher (10 points) also contributed for G-K.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Ida Crown 60, Elgin Academy 54 -- Forty-seven second-half points lifted Ida Crown past the Hilltoppers (3-7), who held a 21-13 halftime lead.
"We were unlucky," Elgin Academy coach Everette Stephens said. "We just didn't come up with any loose balls. But we added to it. We didn't box out."
Elgin Academy was led by Paul Leonardis (19 points) and Aaron Thomas (11 points).
Jacobs tickets on sale -- Tickets are now available for the Jacobs boys basketball game against Schaumburg on Jan. 17 at Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates.
Tickets can be purchased from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the week at Jacobs High School and will also be available Friday night when Grayslake North visits for a boys basketball game.
GYMNASTICS
St. Charles co-op 140.15, Lake Park 137.45, Elgin/Larkin co-op 119.8 -- Ashley Horne finished tied for first in the floor exercise with a 9.6.
"It was a good meet for Ashley, she had a very strong floor routine," Elgin/Larkin coach Bob Todd said. "She's getting better and stronger with every meet and that's what we like to see."
Elgin/Larkin was short-handed in the meet, having lost freshman Hannah Szafranski to a foot stress fracture, and junior Brianne Skweres to illness.
"We had some people doing routines they don't normally do," Todd said. "If we had been at full strength, we'd have posted a much better score."
FOOTBALL
Allen named All-State -- St. Charles East senior running back Wes Allen was named to the Illinois High School Football Coaches' Association's Class 7A All-State football team.
Allen has had an impressive run as a three-year starter for East, compiling 4,250 rushing yards and 58 touchdowns during his career.
Allen was also named the Offensive MVP of the Upstate Eight Conference last season and was named to the IHSFCA Academic All-State team.
