Schedule for Round 2 comes into focus

November 3, 2008

Four area football teams kept their seasons alive over the weekend and now turn their attention to the second round of the state football playoffs.

Although the start times for those four games haven't been officially released by IHSA, the times and dates have been decided.

In Class 8A action, top-seeded Bartlett (10-0) will try square off against No. 8 Fremd (9-2) of the Mid Suburban League at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Hawks edged Niles Notre Dame 10-7 in the first round while Fremd knocked off rival Palatine 24-7.

In other action Friday night, No. 5 Huntley (9-1) will travel to play at No. 13 Grant (7-3) at 7 p.m. in a Class 6A matchup. The Red Raiders beat Batavia 70-63 last week as the two teams combined to set a state record for most combined points in a playoff game. Grant advanced by upsetting Vernon Hills 32-31 in double overtime.

Area playoff action will continue Saturday when No. 6 Genoa-Kingston (8-2) travels to take on No. 14 Richmond-Burton (6-4) in a Class 4A matchup at 1 p.m. The Cogs were 38-34 winners against Hampshire in the first round while the Rockets earned a 35-24 upset win at Braidwood Reed Custer.

In Class 7A action, No. 7 St. Charles East (8-2) travels to take on No. 2 Cary-Grove (10-0) at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The Saints rallied to beat Lake Zurich 17-13 in the first round while the Trojans cruised to a 47-0 win against Rockford Guilford.

Game times for the rest of the contests around the state will be announced on ihsa.org this afternoon. Check back with the Courier on Tuesday for those times and dates.

Huntley sets all-time state rushing record -- As if combining to break the all-time state playoff scoring record weren't impressive enough, Huntley also broke the state's 66-year-old record for most rushing yards in a single game, whether it be in the regular season or postseason.

The Red Raiders racked up 702 yards on 53 carries according to correspondent Joel Reuter. Two other media outlets also reported Huntley tallying more than 700 rushing yards, which would break the old record of 699 yards set in 1942 by Belleville West in a game against Sparta according to ihsa.org.

Here are a few other notable records from Friday's Huntley-Batavia game:

• The 133 combined points is tied for second-most in state history with last year's 75-58 Jacobs win against Larkin. The only game with more points took place in 2002 when Freeport Aquin beat Pearl City Eastland Coop 78-74, adding up to 152 total points.

• Batavia's 63 points is the second-highest total for a losing team in state history behind the 74 scored by Eastland Coop. It bumps Larkin to No. 3 on the list.

• The 19 combined touchdowns are third most in state history.

• Huntley's 710 total yards rank as the fifth-highest in state history.
