North's DeMoss done for season

October 8, 2008

St. Charles North two-sport standout Jonathan DeMoss is expected to miss to the rest of the football season and possibly part of the basketball campaign because of an elbow injury.

DeMoss injured his left elbow on a punt return during a loss to Bartlett on Sept. 27 at Millennium Field in Streamwood. DeMoss, one of North's top receivers, did not play in a victory against South Elgin last Saturday and was later diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament.

DeMoss is expected to visit noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews and possibly undergo the Tommy John procedure next week.

"We'll see what the doctor says. I'm just trying to stay positive," DeMoss said. "You have to look at the positives."

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound DeMoss made 13 receptions for 208 yards with three touchdowns this season for North (4-2), which welcomes Larkin in an Upstate Eight Conference game Friday night.

DeMoss is also a big part of the North Stars basketball program. The guard/forward averaged 12.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game last season, helping North to a 17-12 record and a regional title game appearance.

"It's tough to replace a guy like that," North hoops coach Tom Poulin said. "He's a guy you look to down the stretch of games."

Surgery is not a certainty at this point for DeMoss, a right-handed shooter. But if a medical procedure is necessary, DeMoss could miss up to two months of the basketball season.

"We will be a stronger team because of this," Poulin said. "And if there's a person who can make it back from something like this quicker than you expect, it's Jonathan."

State rankings -- Bartlett (6-0) rose one spot to No. 4 in the Class 8A state football rankings Tuesday, while St. Charles East (4-2) dipped to 10th from seventh in 7A after losing to Neuqua Valley in quadruple overtime.

Genoa-Kingston (6-0) debuted in the 4A poll, standing 10th heading into Friday night's showdown with Oregon (6-0), which is ranked ninth in 3A.
