Horse handlers learn to lead the herd
A horse tractor-trailer accident in Wadsworth last year resulted in the deaths of 18 Belgian draft horses. Horses that become loose after an accident may cause injury to themselves and other drivers. If a horse tractor-trailer accident occurs in the Fox Valley, horse owners and emergency personnel want to be prepared.

Fashion show with flavor supports Easter Seals
Anyone who has ever wondered what Princess Lollipop would look like in real life will get a chance to satisfy their curiosity when Salon Professional Academy hosts its fourth semi-annual beauty and fashion show on Monday. Called "Candyland," the show will benefit Easter Seals DuPage and the Fox Valley Region, a nonprofit that serves children and adults with disabilities.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of McHenry County and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Chicago are partnering to expand mentoring services in the Elgin and Carpentersville communities.

May Crowning Ceremony an annual tradition
The scent of roses filled the air as more than 100 students at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Hampshire prepared to march into the church for the annual May Crowning Ceremony and Mass on Friday, May 2.

Bannerman and crew clean up village for Earth Day
It was a dirty job, but more than 100 village residents showed up to do it. With a particular emphasis on bringing the children of Hampshire into the forefront of the Earth Day efforts, Michelle Bannerman's Project Earth Day cleanup on April 27 was a huge success. For the second year, Bannerman called on her fellow residents to clean up the village.

New pub opens in Huntley's Sun City
Sun City residents have just been given another reason to enjoy the good life. The newest addition to the active lifestyle in Sun City is the Parker O'Riley Pub. It's yet another option beyond fitness and wellness. The pub, which is adjacent to the well-established Walleye Grill restaurant in Sun City's Prairie Lodge, opened its doors on April 28.

What's Up Downtown Elgin: Cinco de Mayo
I am writing this column at 11:30 Monday night. You are probably reading it on Saturday, perhaps over your morning coffee. When I wrote this, I had no idea what the weather would be like outside your window today. And it's driving me crazy. As you are reading this, there is a festival going on in downtown Elgin in the former Gail Borden Public Library parking lot.

Historical museum swings into golf season
Just in time for golf season, the McHenry County Historical Society Museum, 6422 Main St. in Union, will host exhibits and activities likely to interest golfers and golf collectors from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

May is a busy month for Elgin Academy students
As April came to a close, students at Elgin Academy were getting ready for their busiest month of the year. May is filled with all kinds of events -- from our immersion celebration to our annual arts festival. The month concludes the year with our graduation ceremony on May 31.

Annual open house is part fundraiser, part fun
For many years, the Hampshire Fire Protection District has hosted an open house along with its annual brat dinner. This year is no exception, however, the department plans to demonstrate a technical rescue and possibly even an automobile extrication. The event will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the station on Washington Avenue, with the demonstrations beginning between 5 and 5:30 p.m.

Tragedy strikes twice for Holzkamp family
There is a saying that lightning never strikes twice. For the Holzkamp family in Hampshire, however, two children, Jessica, 16, and Andrew, 13, have been stricken by medical problems that have heaped large medical bills upon the family. A "Family Walk for Hope" fundraiser to help the Holzkamp family is slated for Saturday, May 10, at Hampshire High School, 560 S. State St.

Safety fest arms parents with information just in case
A free child safety festival held recently at Dundee Middle School provided parents and children with advice and materials to be used during times of emergencies. The event was sponsored by the True family and the greater Chicago general office of New York Life Insurance Company.

Leungs named March for Babies ambassadors
A Bartlett family that lost a child to premature birth has become the ambassador family for the March for Babies event Sunday at Busse Woods Forest Preserve No. 5 in Elk Grove Village. The site is one of six March for Babies locations in the Chicago area. Other walks will be in Chicago's Grant Park, the Naperville River Walk, Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles, Sunset Woods Park in Highland Park and Midlothian Meadows.

In the whole scheme of a $12.8 million statewide budget, $200,000 doesn't sound like much. But it is half the operating budget for the University of Illinois Extension office in DeKalb County.

Come one, come all -- Huntley charter clubs extend a welcome
When trying to locate a parking space at Sun City's Prairie Lodge becomes like seeking the proverbial needle in a haystack, that could be a sign that something special is going on.

Ecker Center recognizes those who make a difference
It started out simply enough. A neighbor involved with the Ecker Center for Mental Health asked Elgin resident Jamie Van Parys to help with the organization's annual Festival of Trees in 2005. Van Parys had just visited the festival for the first time the year before, but she agreed. Two years later, she was averaging 115 volunteer hours annually with the agency while working full time at Countrywide Home Loans.

H.S. field crew awarded
The crew that paints and maintains the football field at Genoa-Kingston High School has been awarded a national Fields of Excellence award by Pioneer Manufacturing, the company from which the school buys some of its paint. What's so unusual about this award is the crew changes yearly because it's comprised of students.

Jr. Service Board celebrates 7 decades of local service
The Elgin Junior Service Board, established in 1938, is celebrating 70 years of service in the community.
