Police Blotter

May 9, 2008

Elgin

Attempted burglary: Police responded to a report of an attempted break-in at a three-unit apartment building in the 200 block of Raymond Street on Wednesday morning. No items were reported stolen.

Bartlett

Burglaries: Police are investigating a pair of home burglaries and several vehicle burglaries, according to a news release. Officers responded to homes on April 26 and May 8 to investigate incidents that occurred in the overnight hours. Muddy footprints were found in both residences, the release stated. Police are reminding residents to keep doors locked, garage doors shut, blinds closed and valuables out of sight. Vehicles should be parked in well-lit areas with the doors locked and valuables removed. Residents also are encouraged to report suspicious incidents.

Hampshire

Craigslist fraud: A Hampshire woman who had offered some furniture for sale on the craigslist.org Internet site told police someone posing as a buyer tried to defraud her. Cindie Davis, 38, of 210 Johnson St., said a man saying he was from Chillicothe, Ohio, offered to buy the furniture for $550 and sent her a check for $3,500. He asked her to subtract her $550 plus a fee for her help from the $3,500 and send a check for the balance on to a third party to pay for shipping the goods. But before she sent the shipping money, a bank found out the $3,500 check was bogus, she told police.

Lumber theft: A brazen thief stole $400 worth of cut lumber from the back lot of a lumber company located in the same building as the Hampshire police station, at 200 Industrial Drive. The manager at Allenton Lumber told the police next door that the thefts took place in two installments, on the nights of April 28-29 and April 30-May 1. The police department is renting space in the Hampshire Industrial Park until a new village hall and police station are built.

Gun under mattress: An employee at the Super 8 Motel, 115 Arrowhead Drive, told police he was cleaning a guest room Tuesday and found a loaded six-shot revolver under the mattress of its bed. Police said the gun's serial number did not show up on a database. Police were trying to track down the last five people who had stayed in the room -- from Washington, Rockford, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Florida -- but discovered two of those guests had given the motel keeper addresses that do not exist.

Bus injury: Police were investigating a Hampshire woman's complaint that her 9-year-old daughter bruised her leg when a school bus driver braked so abruptly that the girl and several other pupils were thrown from their seats. The mother said the incident happened Tuesday during a school bus run to Gary D. Wright Elementary School.
