DeKalb County


• Killed by train: DeKalb County's coroner's office and sheriff's office are investigating how a 21-year-old pedestrian was killed by a freight train Wednesday afternoon. Statements by the coroner's office and sheriff's office said Kevin C. Jablonsky of Lombard was struck by an eastbound train on the Union Pacific Railroad at about 2:56 p.m. about a quarter mile east of the Nelson Road crossing and just south of Route 38. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:59 p.m. by Chief Deputy Coroner Dave Jacobson. The statement said foul play is not suspected.

Elgin


• Felony retail theft: Jamie L. Toppel, 26, of 18 S. Green St., Carpentersville, was arrested Thursday on a charge of felony retail theft after she allegedly stole PS3 video games and clothing from the Meijer store at 815 Randall Road, police reported. Her bail was set at $3,000 and she is to appear in court Nov. 17.


• Attempted robbery: Police were looking into a report of an attempted robbery in the area of Villa and National streets early Thursday. The victim told police he stopped his vehicle at the intersection about 3 a.m., when he was approached by a man who demanded money. The victim told police he quickly left the area, but that the suspect shot at him, shattering his rear window.


• Stolen vehicle: A black 2007 Nissan Altima was reported stolen from a parking lot in the 800 block of Summit Street Wednesday evening.

Carpentersville


• Felony drug charges: Ricardo Estrada, 32, of 957 Golf Course, Crystal Lake, was arrested Wednesday with several drug-related felony charges after police confiscated 30 grams of cocaine from his vehicle, authorities said. Estrada was parked in the Woodman's Food Market lot on Randall Road when a police officer saw him making what appeared to be a drug deal with a person in another vehicle, police said. Officers stopped Estrada and with the help of a police dog, located the cocaine in his car, they said. Estrada was charged with Class X unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and a misdemeanor charge of no driver's license. Estrada's bail was set at $140,000. He is to appear in court Nov. 19.


• Felony drug charge: Kristen R. Andras, 19, 10509 Church St., Huntley, was arrested Thursday on a charge of unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Andras allegedly possessed three pills containing what is commonly known as ecstasy, police report. Her bail was set at $3,000 and she is to appear in court Nov. 19.

• Rash of vehicle burglaries: Police have taken 11 reports of vehicle burglaries in October and November, according to Sgt. Geoffrey Pretkelis. The burglaries have been reported all over the village, Pretkelis said, involving unlocked cars. Police encourage residents to lock all vehicles and remove valuable items, including GPS units, MP3 players, purses and wallets when leaving a car unattended. Residents should use their garages if possible or park vehicles on well-lit areas of busy streets, police said.

Huntley


• Theft: Police said a resident of the 9700 block of Compton Drive reported Sunday that a DVD player and plasma TV had been stolen. Further details were unavailable.
