Mammograms should start at 40, doctors say
A government panel of scientists say most women don't need mammograms in their 40s, as the American Cancer Society has recommended for nearly two decades, and should get one every two years starting at 50. When it comes to their own bodies, however, local women think early detection is key -- and by any means possible.

Toddler rescued from burning Elgin home
A 2-year-old boy was reported to be in "fine" condition Thursday after being rescued from a fire that heavily damaged a west-side Elgin home. Elgin Fire Department Battalion Chief Terry Bruce said emergency personnel soon learned a baby boy remained inside, sitting in a high chair.

Geneva woman: ‘I was in prison in my own life’
Mia Hays didn't have the storybook senior year of high school. Hanging out with friends, going to prom and graduation mean something completely different when you're pregnant. Being a mom at 18 does, too. "My main priority has been my daughter for two years," said Hays, now 20. "... It got to the point where I felt I was in prison in my own life." So she disappeared for nearly two months.
