2 Elgin schools locked down after gunfire

May 9, 2008

ELGIN -- Two schools on the city's east side were locked down Thursday afternoon in response to reports of shots being fired.

Elgin Police Department spokeswoman Ann Dinges said officers kept students inside Ellis Middle School, 225 S. Liberty St., and Channing Memorial Elementary School, 63 S. Channing St., for about 30 minutes. Both schools were allowed to dismiss students by 3 p.m.

Police received a call a little after 2 p.m. regarding several shots being fired near the intersection of North Street and Dundee Avenue.

As of 4 p.m. Thursday, no arrests have been made and no one has been reported injured, according to Dinges.
