Elgin man could get 60 years for robbing pizza delivery man

October 31, 2009

(ST. CHARLES) A northwest suburban man faces up to 60 years in prison after being convicted of beating and robbing a pizza delivery man in 2008, a crime which netted him $20.

John H. Darrington, 25, of the 400 block of Sunset Drive in Elgin was found guilty of one count of robbery Friday by Associate Judge Allen M. Anderson following a bench trial. He had waived his right to a jury trial, according to a release from the Kane County State's Attorney's office.

On Feb. 10, 2008, Darrington used his cell phone to order a pizza from Domino’s Pizza for delivery to an apartment in the 200 block of Center Street in Elgin, the release said. When the pizza arrived, he beat and robbed the delivery man, taking about $20 from the his pocket.

At about 10 p.m., Elgin police received a call of a person on the ground injured in front of the apartment building. Police used phone records to track down Darrington, and the victim later identified him as his attacker, the release said.

Judge Anderson set sentencing for 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 2 in Courtroom 311 at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles. Darrington faces up to 60 years in prison on the Class 2 felony conviction coupled with his criminal history, which includes two robbery convictions in Cook County, the release said.

Darrington had been held in the Kane County Jail on $75,000 bond, which was revoked upon conviction.
