Teen sentenced to 10 years for starting Elgin house fire
ST. CHARLES — The last of three teens charged with setting a fire that badly damaged a west side Elgin residence in March has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Salvatore Riso, 18, of the 500 block of Wendt Avenue, East Dundee, pled guilty Thursday to one felony count of residential arson, according to Kane County State's Attorney's Office representatives.
Riso, along with Carpentersville residents Jessica A. Fliginger, 18, of the 200 block of North Green Street, and Anthony Huff, 18, of the first block of Elm Avenue, were arrested a day after fire engulfed the entire rear of a two-story, multi-unit building in the 500 block of Ashland Avenue in Elgin on March 23.
Three people were believed to have been inside the two-unit building at the time of the fire, but all escaped without injury. Damages were estimated at around $70,000 and five cats had to be rescued from a second-floor apartment.
Witnesses at the scene said they believed the incident was an act of retaliation for a fight that took place at the residence a couple of days prior.
Riso was the last of the three charged to be convicted in the case. Huff was sentenced Sept. 2 to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of residential arson, while Fliginger was sentenced to two years probation Sept. 30 after pleading guilty to one count of reckless property damage.
