Elginite guilty of trying to buy 1 kilo of cocaine

October 26, 2009

Sentencing is scheduled Dec. 9 for an Elgin man convicted Friday of attempting to buy a large amount of cocaine from an undercover police officer.

James E. Dumas, 36, of the 500 block of Preston Ave., was found guilty by Associate Judge Allen M. Anderson of one count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, a Class X felony, and one count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a Class 1 felony.

Authorities said that during the week prior to Sept. 24, 2008, Dumas negotiated the purchase of 1 kilogram of cocaine from an undercover Elgin police officer. The following week, Dumas met with the undercover officer to further discuss the transaction, asked to see the cocaine and handled the cocaine, police said. In January 2009, Elgin police officers sought a warrant for Dumas' arrest based on his desire, willingness and attempt to purchase the cocaine, police said.

A bench trial for Dumas, who had waived his right to a jury trial, was conducted Oct. 9 and Oct. 20. Anderson issued his verdict Friday.

Dumas faces up to 60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. His next court appearance is set for 1 p.m. Dec. 9 for motions and sentencing.

The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State's Attorneys Sam Partida and Kelly M. Orland.
