A survey of surrounding communities indicates that South Elgin has one of the most expensive parking ticket fines in the area. However, the fines for parking tickets and other ordinance violations written by an officer vary widely among local towns. Some give residents a break if they pay their parking tickets early. Others tack on extra fines if the ticket is not paid on time.




ECC instructor attacked in campus lot
An Elgin Community College instructor was treated at a hospital Tuesday after he reported being attacked in a school parking lot, college officials reported Wednesday.

Kane prosecutor makes bid for judgeship
John Barsanti may resign from his post as Kane County state's attorney before the year is up. Veteran 16th Circuit Judge Michael J. Colwell announced Wednesday that he plans to retire at the end of November. Now serving his second elected term as state's attorney, Barsanti already has applied to fill the anticipated vacancy.

Many teenagers get gift certificates or clothes on their birthdays. Matt Dahlberg, however, got the gift of life on his 16th birthday after receiving a kidney transplant in what was called a "perfect match." Matt needed the surgery in October of 2008 because of Fifth disease, which lowers a person's immune system. By the time he was in sixth grade, he said, his kidneys were functioning at only 60 percent. And by his sophomore year it was down to 20 percent.

St. Edward topples South Elgin
St. Edward got its first tennis win of the season against South Elgin on Wednesday. The Green Wave won all five matches, improving its record to 1-3 in non-conference matches, while the Storm dropped to 2-4. "Today has been really good," Wave coach Jaci Corn said. "We came out ready to play. In terms of match score, the girls were successful."
Cougars beat rehabbing Cubs pitcher Silva
With the Kane County Cougars in a tight race for a playoff spot with six games to go, right-hander Murphy Smith handcuffed Peoria through seven innings Wednesday night and was backed up by an offense that roughed up a rehabbing Carlos Silva to the tune of a 7-0 win at Elfstrom Stadium.

Summer Sunset Festival this weekend
Often called the last hurrah of summer, Lake in the Hills' annual Summer Sunset Festival is set for Friday through Sunday at Sunset Park, 5200 Miller Road. Highlights include the ever-popular Melon Propellin' contest and a newly rejuvenated Battle of the Bands competition, both to be held Saturday, and a fireworks finale slated for Sunday night.
