Bike and Ski Club
The Fox Valley Bicycle & Ski Club will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. Area cyclists are invited. Tom and Julie Szafraniec, longtime club members and ride leaders, will discuss how to plan and lead a successful ride, including safe bike handling on the trail and on the road. NARFE
National Active and Retired Federal Employees Chapter 2181 will host its next meeting at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion meeting room at 820 N. Liberty St. (Illinois 25) in Elgin. This month, Elgin Senior Services Associates activity directors Minnie Vasquez and Patti Strahan will give a program about preventing falls. Strahan will lead some light exercises. AAUW
The AAUW book and garage sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 865 Wing St., Elgin. Nearly 40 members contribute more than 1,500 gently read books, according to organizers. Other available items include a dry sink, perennials, furniture, glassware, dinnerware, household items, clothing and more. Proceeds will be used for the Educational Foundation, which gives scholarships to women seeking advanced degrees. For information, call (847) 742-4866.

Astronomers Club
Northwest Suburban Astronomers Club members Mitch Trilling and Bruce Reuben will present a visual travelogue of their two-day stay with the Advanced Observing Program at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, at the Hoffman Estates Park District Community Center, 1685 W. Higgins Road. Trilling and Reuben had exclusive use of one of the observatories for two full nights of visual observing and imaging. Visit www.nsaclub.org.
South Elgin
Lions Club
The South Elgin Lions Club is collecting used rubber-sole shoes for the Lions of Illinois 1J District's new environmental program. The shoes will be ground up and turned into playing surfaces such as indoor tracks or playing fields (Astroplay). Shoes can be taken to Willard Elementary School, Fox Meadow Elementary School, Otter Creek Elementary School and Kenyon Woods Middle School. Independent Order of Odd Fellows
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Lodge 105, 131 Sabin St. in Sycamore, will host a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14. Dinner will include spaghetti with meatballs or sausage, bread, salad, coffee, juice and desert. Cost will be $7 for adults, $4 for children 7 to 14 and free for children younger than 7.
