Bartlett artist brands summer arts festival

May 4, 2008

Denise Laurin has been selected by the Arts in Bartlett organization as the winner of the Bartlett Festival of the Arts logo contest.

More than 30 entries were submitted from a wide range of talented residents -- from high school students to professional graphic artists -- according to the organization.

Laurin, a fine artist, graphic designer and instructor, submitted the winning design, which will be seen in and around the village this year.

Arts in Bartlett, created in 2002, is a nonprofit arts council with a mission of celebrating the arts and personal creativity so the community as well as each individual is enriched.

The new logo will be used on all materials connected with Bartlett's Festival of the Arts this summer, including its letterhead, Web site, ads, posters, T-shirts and tote bags produced to promote the event.

The logo contest was initiated to rebrand the sixth annual Festival of the Arts, which will be held June 28 and 29. The rebranding was to highlight this year's more comprehensive juried fine art fair, which will incorporate multiple cultural art forms.

Juried artists will have booths where they will offer many of their works for sale, and there will be food and expanded entertainment that will include dance, music, drama, literature, children's activities and workshops.

Some of the workshops will include topics of the culinary arts, floral design and quilting, and there will be various arts and craft demonstrations.

Laurin's winning logo depicts a treble clef fronting the gazebo in Bartlett Park, where the Festival of the Arts will be held. A graceful dancer is poised on the point of a paintbrush coming from the musical symbol.

Laurin describes her entry as "reflecting my belief that the arts fill us with joy and exuberance."

In addition to her work as an award-winning designer and college instructor, Laurin is president of Make a Living Creatively, which offers seminars for graphic and fine artists on how to earn a living while doing what they love.

For her winning logo, Laurin received a $100 prize and one year's free membership in the Arts in Bartlett organization.

According to Arts in Bartlett, Laurin chose to donate her cash prize for student memberships for the Streamwood High School class that also submitted entries.
