Housing aid bill faces veto by President Bush
Democrats' plans to help hundreds of thousands of homeowners struggling with rising subprime mortgage rates and plummeting house values could be sidetracked by President Bush's threatened veto and the backing of many congressional Republicans.



Sky-high gas prices aren't giving Bill Figel the blues. He's managed to save money by navigating around them. Two years ago he gave the family van to charity and, instead of buying another second car, he invested in bicycles.



Fox Valley Publications President Fred Lebolt Thursday announced important changes to the senior management team at Fox Valley Publications, as well as a plan to accelerate the news group's transition to an integrated, multimedia company. Fox Valley daily newspapers include The Beacon News in Aurora, The Courier News in Elgin, The Herald News in Joliet and the Naperville Sun.



DETROIT---- General Motors Corp. said Thursday that the shaky real estate market convinced the automaker that it was a good time to buy its previously leased headquarters in downtown Detroit's towering Renaissance Center for $626 million.



Illinois Tool Works Inc., a conglomerate known for making dozens of mostly small acquisitions every year, landed an agreement for its biggest deal since 1999 on Thursday when British restaurant equipment supplier Enodis PLC accepted its $2 billion buyout.



Parent companies of the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune reported losses from ongoing operations Thursday and provided fresh evidence of declines in advertising revenue.
