Plainfield Central started the 2008 season with a dominating win at home Friday night. The Wildcats scored a convincing 47-25 nonconference win over Elgin. Plainfield North and South were also in action.

There is a slight coolness in the air that is letting all of us know that the tearing up of the road season should be over soon and winter will be arriving shortly. Elgin police are investigating a shooting that left one person injured on North Gifford Street at about 3:35 p.m. today.

3 charged in Elgin home invasion

East meets West at Elgin's first Asian Fest
Olympians Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor make volleyball look easy. Maybe that's because they are allowed to use their arms and hands to hit the ball. If they were playing the Asian sport, sepak takraw, it wouldn't look so simple. A glimpse of the unique sport will be one highlight of Elgin's first Asian Fest slated for noon to 10 p.m. Saturday at Festival Park. The event is being sponsored by the Asian Community Network.

Summer Sunset features melon toss
As part of Lake in the Hills' annual Summer Sunset Festival, which goes on today through Sunday in Sunset Park, teams will use homemade contraptions once used to battle barbarians at the gate to launch produce across soccer fields. The Melon Propellin' contest will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday.
