Residents on the Elgin's near-west side regularly witness crimes ranging from prostitution to drug trafficking, according to Matt Szymonik, a neighborhood resident. "It's distressing for my wife to walk down the streets in our neighborhood," said Szymonik. " ... On one street they're selling drugs, and you turn on to another street and there's prostitution going on." Five people were charged last month with prostitution- and solicitation-related charges in Elgin, said Police Chief Lisa Womack.

South Elgin targets neglected vacant homes
When a home goes into foreclosure, it's a heart-breaking problem for the family that lives there. But once they leave and the house falls into the hands of a bank, mortgage company or investor, the foreclosure also becomes a problem for the neighborhood. Pressed by a wave of foreclosures in South Elgin, the village board approved an ordinance this week cracking down on owners who let vacant properties fall apart.

Large crowds, hundreds of gawking college recruiters and a 2-0 deficit in a best-of-five match for the championship of a nationally recognized tournament -- organized by the Junior Volleyball Directors Association -- seems like a lot to handle for a group of 16-year-olds nearly 350 miles away from home in Louisville, Ky. Apparently not for a talented squad representing Marengo-based Club Fusion.

Hampshire juniors Amy and Kara Wehrs don't even have their driver's licenses yet. That just means they need a ride when they go on unofficial visits to Division I volleyball programs seeking their services two years down the road.

Fox Valley club touts gas-free vehicles
They call it the EV grin. Electric vehicle drivers sport it when they cruise silently by a gas station. When the price of gas goes up, they're about the only ones smiling.
