Wing Park: A neighborhood built to last
ELGIN -- Throughout the city of Elgin are pockets of history and architectural uniqueness. From grand Victorian mansions on the east side to the tiny Cape Cods built on the west, Elgin's neighborhoods appeal to unique markets.
Tom Krebsbach of Vintage Home Realty knows his market in the Elgin area, and when it comes to historical homes and neighborhoods, Krebsbach is the consummate professional.
The Wing Park neighborhood, while not the oldest in the area -- being built between 1915 and 1945 -- still has many great features, including that the homes in it were built to last.
"It is a well-taken-care-of neighborhood," Krebsbach said. "Most people like the feel that you have there."
The west-side neighborhood's location across from Wing Park -- with its band shell, pool and public golf course -- is one of the great draws to the area. The other is its convenient proximity to major commuter arteries and public transportation, as well as the downtown and Randall Road.
The neighborhood is made up of sturdy brick bungalows, Tudors, four-square models and a few unique vintage homes such as the mansion on the corner of Highland and McClure. The north end of the neighborhood offers a sampling of ranch homes built in the 1950s and 1960s.
Price ranges in the neighborhood sell between $200,000 and $400,000 at the high end. There are currently quite a few homes on the market at this time, according to Krebsbach.
The neighborhood is primarily served by Washington and Highland elementary schools, Kimball Middle High and Larkin High School.
