'Work truck' gets the job done

June 14, 2008

Boasting best-in-class horsepower, towing capability and fuel economy, GMC introduced an all-new Sierra light-duty pickup truck last year.

Featuring a distinctive exterior design and spaciously refined interiors, the automaker is looking to continue its truck momentum that began in early 2006 with the debut of its brand-new, full-sized SUV models.

Changes for 2008 include standard XM Satellite radio, availability of a power-adjustable driver's seat on regular cab models with a bench seat, brighter instrument pointers in the gauge cluster and two new exterior colors: Dark Crimson Metallic and Sonoma Red Metallic.

In the midst of high gasoline prices and even higher vehicle sticker prices, this Sierra 1500 Work Truck brings the automaker's best combination of full-sized high-tech, high-value to the marketplace with a base price of around $21,000. The Sierra 1500 Work Truck is offered with a 6½-foot or 8-foot cargo bed.

The standard powerplant for the Sierra 1500 Work Truck is the Vortec 4.3-liter V6 with both the 4.8-liter or 5.3-liter V8 engines as an extra cost option. There is also an E-85 capable version of the 5.3-liter V8 available for maximum fueling flexibility. Torque is transferred to the ground through one of two GM-sourced Hydra-Matic electronic four-speed automatic transmissions: 4L60 or 4L70. Consumers may also choose between a two- or manual four-wheel driveline configuration for the best application of cargo hauling and vehicle traction.

At speed with the optional 5.3L FlexFuel V8 powertrain, the Sierra is comfortable, manageable and responsive. Despite being a base model in the GMC truck lineup, there is nothing cheap or tinny about this pickup.

The GMC Sierra delivers enhanced stability and driving confidence from a boxed frame that is significantly stronger and stiffer than the last model ... 234 percent increased torsional stiffness and 62 percent increased vertical bending stiffness. A hydroformed front section enhances both the smooth ride characteristics and crash protection.

A three-inch wider front track and one-inch wider rear track facilitate increased stability as well as a smoother, controlled ride -- particularly when cornering or with a full load. A coil-over-shock front suspension is mounted to the frame via a high-strength, precise attachment system for exceptional rigidity and delivers a linear, responsive ride to enhance the truck's fully planted driving feel.

Inside the passenger cabin, the Sierra is more spacious with increased storage space, improved comfort and more convenience. Flush surfaces, tight gaps and tolerances suggest a crafted interior of above average quality. Larger controls and door handles are designed to work easier with gloves. A large capacity, double glove box is integrated into the instrument panel. 2008 GMC Sierra
