Bolingbrook falls in overtime

January 24, 2009

FLOSSMOOR -- Two of the better teams in the Chicago area -- Bolingbrook High School and Homewood-Flossmoor -- squared off against each other Friday.

And when all was said and done, H-F had recorded a 53-51 overtime win in a Southwest Suburban Conference crossover.

Bolingbrook (11-6) owned a 38-25 lead midway through the third quarter. The Raiders had built a 25-19 halftime advantage on H-F (12-5).

"We have to do a better job of keeping our composure and not getting rattled," Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. "We knew that H-F would make some adjustments at halftime. It was a case of us not adjusting ourselves."

Bolingbrook trailed 43-40 in the fourth quarter when senior guard Diamond Taylor (game-high 19 points) made two free throws. He stole the inbounds pass and swished a 3-pointer, putting the Raiders up 45-43.

Taylor's free throw late in regulation gave Bolingbrook a 47-46 lead. H-F's Julian Brooks tied the game 47-47 with a free throw with 40 seconds left.

With time winding down, the Raiders' Ryan Walker took a 3-pointer which hit off the rim and bounced off.

A Lewis rebound basket gave the Vikings a 49-47 lead in the overtime. But Russell Burns knotted the game at 49-all.

Later in the OT, the Raiders' Troy Snyder (14 points, 7 rebounds)made a basket to tie the game at 51-51.

H-F's Courtney Jones drove to the basket and made a layup to put the Vikings up 53-51 with 10 seconds remaining.

Bolingbrook did not call a timeout and drove down court. Taylor's shot from the far right corner missed and the Vikings had secured the victory.

Turnovers plagued Bolingbrook, which committed 24 miscues. Of those turnovers, 17 occurred in the second half.

"You have to know time and score," Brost said. "We took some ill-advised shots."
