Family held at gunpoint
JOLIET -- Four masked intruders menaced a family at gunpoint early Thursday.
Police Chief Fred Hayes said the home invasion occurred around 12:35 a.m. at the residence in the 300 block of South Chicago Street.
"Two people were sleeping and three were awake when the doorbell rang and they came inside, pushed the victims to the ground and began ransacking the house asking for 'the safe, the money or drugs,'" he said.
As the four men ransacked the house, one of them held a silver revolver while the others kept their hands in their pockets as if they were also armed. One of the men threatened to kill a 9-year-old girl, who'd been sleeping in bed, Hayes said.
After taking cell phones, credit cards and cash, the robbers fled on foot.
No one was injured. Police brought a canine unit to the scene, but were unable to locate the bandits.
The suspects were described as black men in their 20s wearing dark clothing.
The suspect with the silver handgun was wearing a black ski mask with red outlines. His accomplices were either masked or using their coats to cover their faces.
Fire Chief Dan Forsythe said residents were home when the fire was reported around 7 p.m., but were able to escape without injury.
"It took about 15 minutes to put the fire out. Except for smoke and water, the damage was confined to one upstairs bedroom," he said.
East Joliet, Elwood and New Lenox firefighters assisted Manhattan with the fire, the cause of which is under investigation.

• Lalitha Y. Chandler , 25, of 1401 Sehring Ave. in Joliet, and Coretta S. Broadway , 22, of 1413 Sehring Ave. in Joliet, were arrested by Romeoville police and booked into the county jail Monday on charges of theft.
• Angel F. Rodriguez , 24, of 903 N. Center St. in Joliet, was arrested by Joliet police and booked into the county jail Monday on a charge of possession of fraudulent identification.
• Matthew W. Mueller , 22, of 4023 S. Harlem Ave. in Stickney, was arrested by sheriff's police and booked into the county jail Monday on a charge of burglary.
• Joseph A. Shamonski , 22, of 603 Oxford Court in New Lenox, was arrested by sheriff's police and booked into the county jail Monday on a charge of manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance.
