Popcorn Panel: 'Amelia'

I was disappointed with this movie. Hilary Swank played Amelia Earhart, the first female aviator to make a solo flight across the Atlantic. The movie just didn't cut it for me. I was thinking to myself finally we are going to find out what happened to Amelia Earhart. It seems that every book and historian had their own theory about the disappearance of Earhart and Fred Noonan. It was pretty stale. This kind of a movie should have been an HBO or PBS special. It was nice seeing Richard Gere back in the movies, but overall wait for DVD.

There is already Oscar buzz surrounding Hilary Swank's performance as Amelia Earhart, and with good reason. This film offers a glimpse into the life of the mysterious Earhart, famous for being the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and for vanishing while flying around the world. This captivating movie makes Earhart come alive as it explores her dedication and passion for flying, as well as her love life. Swank succeeds in showcasing the likability and charms that Earhart radiated. Though it's still too early to call, the possibility of Swank earning another statue is not far off.

Hilary Swank was an excellent choice to play Amelia. Not only does she resemble her but the two-time Oscar winner is very good at playing the plucky, "nothing can stop me" female. The film has a very good and authentic look with excellent cinematography and good costuming. Amelia was and is an icon. The first woman pilot to fly across the Atlantic, giving her the nickname of "Lady Lindy," she opened the doors for female aviators. America adored her. After watching tons of TV specials on her, I was frankly disappointed. I found nothing new and very little depth.
