Oswego East surrenders just two hits in win over Titans

Holding IMSA to two hits was impressive. So was the Oswego East batting display that pounded out 16 hits on the way to a 11-5 win.

But surrendering 11 walks to the Titans is something Oswego East realizes it needs to improve upon.

"That's been our Achilles' heel, especially when I get past my No. 1," said Wolves coach Mario Serra. "We lack a little bit of control, and that's definitely cost us throughout the year."

In anticipation of today's game against rival Oswego, No. 1 Ashley Michalek threw only 43 pitches over three innings on Monday. The junior walked three, struck out one and didn't allow a hit.

"That made me learn (the ump) had a smaller zone," Michalek said of her four-pitch leadoff walk to Allison Larrabee (three walks). "Once I hit that next strike I figured I could go straight down the middle because they weren't getting the bats around."

Not a problem for the Wolves, who batted around in the first off IMSA senior Tiernan Evans (two strikeouts, two walks). Sophomore catcher Tarah Ettinger lobbed a single to right, No. 4 hitter Sarah Girls (4-for-5, 2 RBIs) knocked a run-scoring single to left and Alaya Tunk drove in a pair with a single.

"I definitely think we're seeing the ball more," said Ettinger, who finished a homerun shy of the cycle.

IMSA (7-12) scored its first two runs -- in the fourth and seventh -- as Ettinger threw wild on two pickoff attempts at third, and didn't get its first hit until Katie Kunstom slapped a double to center in the sixth. But Lindsey Choi added an RBI single in the seventh as the Titans drew five walks and tacked on four runs.

"We're not giving up," said IMSA coach Sam Bonafede. "We've got the talent. We've just got to put it together."
