WHEATON -- Josh Zinzer helped the West Aurora Blackhawks claim second place at the DuPage Valley Conference track meet Friday night finishing in a dead heat in the 100 meter dash, grabbing second in the 200 meter dash and racing in two relays. Zinzer and Wheaton North's Ken Collier put on a show for the crowd.
Zinzer bolted from the starting blocks in each of the dashes, but Collier was able to close the gap. A photo finish in the 100 meter showed a dead heat, and the 200 meter dash was equally exciting.
Zinzer led coming out of the turn, but Collier caught him with 15 meters to go and nipped him by a .1 of second. Zinzer and Collier recorded a time of 11.2 seconds in the 100 meter dash and Collier won the 200 in 22.6.
"I know most (of the field) is gunning for me," said Zinzer after the 200, his sixth race of the day. "It feels good to have the competition and someone chasing you. The only way I lose the 200 is at the very end when the guys bring it in. It's been a long day, six races. I couldn't be any happier."
The Blackhawks 400 relay team of Kendall Peoples, Leon Spears, Zinzer and Joel Vincent finished second with a time of 43.4, .7 behind Wheaton North's squad. That same relay team also claimed second in the 800 relay behind the Falcons squad. Wheaton North won the conference plaque with 150 points. West ended the day with 99.5 points.
"He's really exciting; he makes the other guys come and get him," said West Aurora coach Cortney Lamb of Zinzer. "Ken Collier was just awesome. He has one more gear there at the end."
Tony Knight won the 400 meter dash in 49.6 seconds. Vincent placed second in the triple jump (44-01.25) and third in the long jump (21-06.25). Kevin Costin was third in the discus (141-02.5) while Juan Perez was third in the shot put (51-07.0). Marcus Waller claimed third in the 110 meter high hurdles and fifth in the 300 meter hurdles.
