YORKVILLE -- Andrew Nelson and Joe Augustine hit the trifecta Friday during the Western Sun Conference Meet at Campbell Field.
Each Viking won three events and helped pace Geneva to a conference title with 155.5 points and spoil the evening for rival Batavia. Despite leading for much of the contest, the Bulldogs finished second with 132.5, while Kaneland placed third with 73 and the host Foxes finished seventh with 22.
"This is one of the first times I have tripled," said a winded Nelson, after running the third leg of the victorious 1,600-meter relay. "Conference is a great meet for a team. It is the ultimate team meet."
The junior won individual medals in the 1,600 run with a time of 4:28.65 and set a conference record in the 800 with a time of 1:57.67.
"We knew it came down to the four by four (1,600 relay)," Nelson said.
The Vikings won in a time of 3:27.96.
"I wanted to do everything I could for the team," he added.
Augustine finished first in the 400, 200 and long jump. The senior set a record by leaping 21 feet, six and a half inches in the long jump.
The Vikings also placed first in the 3,200 relay and Frank Boenzi shattered another conference record by tossing the shot put 54 feet, one inch.
Batavia won the 400 and 800 relays, while senior Javaris Covington leaped six feet, five inches to win the high jump and set a conference record.
"It means so much," Covington said of his victory. "I worked extra hard and changed my mind set."
Kaneland's Logan Markuson had a pole vault of 13-3 inches to win his event, while teammate Phil Christensen won the discus and set a new record with a hurl of 173-6.
Yorkville's Kris Mizel was the lone victor for the Foxes. The senior leaped 43 1/4 feet to win the triple jump in his last home meet.
"It was really exciting to win at home," Mizel said.
"This has been a good year."
