BATAVIA -- Strong pitching. Timely hitting. Solid defense. Following Geneva's 3-0 Western Sun Conference victory over rival Batavia on Friday afternoon, there wasn't much that Geneva coach Greg Dierks could find fault with his team's performance.

"The only thing we didn't do well today was our base running," Dierks said. "We had a couple people just invent moves on their own and ran themselves into some outs ... we were fortunate that we got away with it."

With freshman pitcher Kelly McCaffrey taking the hill for the Vikings, Geneva (11-11, 5-6) had a little more room for error. McCaffrey (9-6), who went the distance in the 1-0 victory against Batavia on April 17, struck out seven, walked two and allowed only four hits in a complete-game, 85-pitch effort.

"I think against Batavia has been her strong games," said Geneva catcher Dee Phalon. "Everything was working really well."

Batavia freshman Brooke Nelson (5-7) had a solid outing for the Bulldogs (9-14, 4-6), striking out three and giving up six hits in seven innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth after surrendering a one-out walk to No. 9 hitter Kait Pennybacker.

Junior Nikki Davis (2-for-4) singled and Danielle Caprile (2-for-2, walk) served the first pitch from Nelson into center, sending courtesy runner Natalie Hoselton to the plate.

Batavia's Kelly Coleman threw a laser ahead of Hoselton, but freshman catcher Christine Lynam (caught two runners stealing) couldn't grip the ball and Hoselton fought her way to the plate. Phalon followed with a two-strike, two RBI double into right-center field.
