The Waubonsie Valley High School girls soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a 2-1 victory over St. Charles East Thursday night in the Upstate Eight Conference closer. In the process the defending-state championWarriors (18-0-1 overall, 10-0 UEC) extended their unbeaten streak to 50 games and won their third straight UEC title.
"This was a good game for us heading into the regionals," said Waubonsie coach Julie Bergstrom.
The Warriors got on the board early when Bri Rodriguez and Rachel Bostick connected in the fourth minute. Rodriguez centered a pass to Bostick who was in perfect position to head it into the left side for the 1-0 Waubonsie lead.
The Warriors extended their lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the half. This time, Jessica Blake and Megan Green weaved through the St.Charles defense with some nifty passing. Green received the last pass and put a low roller into the lower right corner, giving Waubonsie Valley a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
After the break, the Warriors looked to be a bit on their heels, with the Saints applying heavy pressure in the Waubonsie Valley defensive end. St. Charles finally broke the through in the sixth minute when Kerry Savage centered a pass to Ellen Bartindale who headed it in to cut the Warriors' lead in half at 2-1. The goal broke a streak of 1,249 minutes Waubonsie had gone without allowing a goal.
Waubonsie Valley tightened up their play after the goal, but late in the game, St. Charles had one last drive to test the Warriors. With just under five minutes to play, Bartindale broke free from the Waubonsie Valley defense and streaked up the right side. She got a good shot off low, and goalie Claire Hanold made a terrific diving save to ensure the Warriors' victory.
